Tricare for Life

CB0009-19

It is important to be familiar with the basics of TRICARE for Life (TFL). TFL is designed to pay the patient’s responsibility after Medicare pays their portion.

How does an individual receive TRICARE For Life benefits? An Individual must:

  • Be a Medicare eligible uniformed service retiree 65 or older, OR
  • Be an active duty under 65 with Medicare Part A because of a disability or because of ESRD and with Medicare Part B, OR
  • Be a dependent of an active duty service member who is allowed Medicare for any reason.
  • Must have Medicare Parts A and B (yes, members must still pay Part B Medicare premiums).

*An exception to the requirement for Part B coverage exists when the member is an active duty service member or the Medicare eligible beneficiary is the spouse of an Active Duty Service Member.

What sets TRICARE for Life apart from Medicare?

  • TFL includes a prescription drug benefit, so members may not need a Part D plan
  • After Medicare pays its portion of the claim, TFL pays the remaining amount, and you pay nothing. As the primary payer, Medicare approves health care services for payment.
  • TFL is the only payer overseas. Medicare provides coverage in the U.S. and U.S. territories.

*Please be aware that if Medicare does not pay because it determines that the care is not medically necessary, TRICARE For Life also does not pay.
