2019 Medicare Costs at a Glance Parts A & B

Part A Premium Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A (sometimes called “premium-free Part A”.  If you buy Part A, you will pay up to $437 each month.  If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $437.  If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $240.
Part A Hospital Inpatient Deductible and Coinsurance
  • $1,364 deductible for each benefit period
  • Days 1-60: $0 coinsurance for each benefit period
  • Days 61-90: $341 coinsurance per day of each benefit period
  • Days 91 and beyond: $682 coinsurance per each “lifetime reserve day” after day 90 for each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime)
  • Beyond lifetime reserve days: All costs
  • Inpatient mental health care in a psychiatric hospital limited to 190 days in a lifetime

 
Skilled Nursing Facility Care
  • 0 for the first 20 days of each benefit period
  • $170.50 per day for days 21-100 of each benefit period
  • All costs for each day after day 100 in a benefit period
Home Health Care Services
  • $0 for home health care services
  • 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for durable medical equipment
Part B Premium
  • Standard premium: $135.50  (or higher depending on your income)
  • An estimated 2 million Medicare beneficiaries (about 3.5%) will pay less than the full Part B standard monthly premium amount in 2019 due to the statutory hold harmless provision, which limits certain beneficiaries’ increase in their Part B premium to be no greater than the increase in their Social Security benefits.
Part B Deductibles and Coinsurance
  • $185 yearly deductible
  • 20% coinsurance for most covered services, like doctor’s services and some preventive services, if provider accepts assignment
  • $0 for most preventive services
  • 20% coinsurance for outpatient mental health services, copayments for hospital outpatient services and durable medical equipment (DME)
