2018 Medicare Costs at a Glance

Part A Premium Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A (sometimes called “premium-free Part A”. If you buy Part A, you will pay up to $422 each month in 2018. If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $422 in 2018. If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $232 in 2018.
Part A Hospital Inpatient Deductible and Coinsurance
  • $1,340 deductible and no coinsurance for days 1-60 of each benefit period
  • $335 per day for days 61-90 each benefit period
  • $670 per “lifetime reserve day” after day 90 of each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime)
  • All costs for each day after the lifetime reserve days
  • Inpatient mental health care in a psychiatric hospital limited to 190 days in a lifetime
Skilled Nursing Facility Care
  • 0 for the first 20 days of each benefit period
  • $167.50 per day for days 21-100 of each benefit period
  • All costs for each days after day 100 in a benefit period
Home Health Care Services
  • $0 for home health care services
  • 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for durable medical equipment
Part B Deductibles and Coinsurance
  • $183 yearly deductible
  • 20% coinsurance for most covered services, like doctor’s services and some preventative services, if provider accepts assignment
  • $0 for most preventive services
  • 20% coinsurance for outpatient mental health services, and copayments for hospital outpatient services
